How To Replace A Toilet Drain Line

How To Remove A Toilet

In our last article we discussed a toilet drain line and when it needs to be replaced. Assuming that you determined that your toilet drain line needs to be replaced this article will provide you with the steps on how to do that.

Step 1: Remove Toilet

Start out by removing your toilet and then unscrewing the toilet flange from the floor and removing it from the drain pipe.

Step 2: Cut Away Flooring

Using a circular saw with a blade depth of 1/8″ cut away the flooring around the toilet between the floor joists.

Step 3: Cut Away Old Closet Bend

With the floor cut and access now to below the floor available you want to go ahead and cut away the old closet bend. This can be done using a reciprocating saw.

Step 4: Create A New Toilet Drain

Build a new toilet drain to run to the waste-vent stack by using a straight length of pipe and a closet bend. When installing make sure you leave a space of 15″ between the bowl side wall surfaces and the bowl. Also ensure that the slope of the drain is at least 1/4″ every foot running towards the stack and supported by a plastic pipe that is attached to framing members. Insert a pipe 6″ in length into the top inlet of the closet bend, this will be cut off with a hand-saw once the pipes are tested.

Step 5: Replace The Floor

Start by cutting a piece of exterior-grade plywood to fit the cutout area of your floor. Use a jigsaw to cut out a circular opening in your plywood to allow the toilet drain stub-out. Position the piece of plywood into the opening of the hole, if it fits perfectly then secure it into place using screwing 2″ screw into the joist below the floor.
